Frequently Asked Questions
What is meels?
Meels curates and delivers fresh (never frozen) meals. Our team of chefs and nutritionists combine wholesome, non-GMO, and organic ingredients to craft food that takes care of you, so you can be at your best.
Our meals are fully cooked, so all you need to do is heat, and eat! Forget shopping, chopping, prepping, and cleaning - simply follow the heating instructions on the back of your meal sleeve.
We've been eating since we were little, and we've used other prepared food services in the past.
We looked for:
Organic ingredients
Antibiotic-free seafood
Antibiotic-free chicken
Grass-fed beef
Vegan options
On top of those requirements, we wanted it to be delicious, and affordable!
Sadly, we were unsuccessful in our search, so we started Meels β
What should I know before I order?
You're about to save a ton of time and eat better than ever before. Here are 5 things to make your experience even better:
Creating an automatic subscription will allow you to automatically receive deliveries without having to worry about submitting an order before a cut-off. You'll also save 10% off each subsequent order automatically.
If you don't create a subscription, be sure to keep an eye out for the cut-off reminders that we send so you never miss a delivery!
Choose a reusable insulated bag instead of a box to help us lower our carbon footprint. You can reuse it for picnics, grocery shopping, or return it for full credit on your next delivery!
You are in total control - choose as many or as few meals as you want. We do not impose any minimum orders.
Your first order is a big deal! If you're on a subscription, make sure to double-check the selections after every automatic order, you are able to make changes, removals, or additions at any time until the cut-off!
Do I have to create a subscription?
No! We believe in ultimate freedom and flexibility. We're like the partner you wish was a bit more clingy. Meels gives you total control of your orders - and with that, we allow you to create one-time orders OR to create a subscription if you prefer that.
When you create a one-time order, that's all you'll get, it won't automatically bill you in the future, or send you food unannounced.
When you create a subscription, you'll easily be able to cancel, modify, add, remove, or pause the subscription directly on our website with one click of a button.
How do you deliver?
Once you click "Submit Order" your card will be charged and the order will be placed. You can then go to My Account to see your pending orders and the information about them.
Your meals are prepared fresh and packed in our insulated bag. We use a company called WEELS (we know, creative ) to deliver your food on the day you selected. Your order remains temperature controlled until it is picked up by the courier for your delivery.
If you're located outside of our local delivery area, we utilize UPS to ship your order. Our awesome packaging is tested to make sure your meals are nice and cool for 2 days of shipping plus another 12 hours at your door. Once your order ships, we'll send you an email with your tracking info - You can also find the tracking info under your Orders by clicking on "My Account" in the top right corner.
Not home when your meals are delivered? No worries! The carrier will leave your bag right at your door. If you live in an apartment, your box may be left in the lobby, concierge, or mail area. Once you have your bag, stick the meals in the fridge! As always, don't forget to return the bags for full credit. β»οΈ
Are all of my meals delivered the same day?
Yup, all the meals in your order will be delivered together on your chosen day of delivery. π¦ Be sure to refrigerate the meals upon arrival, though you can freeze a few to extend the shelf life. We recommend enjoying them fresh.
Can I gift meels to someone?
For sure! We offer e-gift cards for friends and family in just a few steps. π Head over to "Buy Gift Cards", enter the amount you want to gift, and voila!
We'll send an email to the giftee with a unique code for them to redeem. If they're not already part of the Meels fam, they'll need to create a new account. No worries though!
Once you enter the recipient's email address, they'll immediately receive an email with the gift code. If you'd rather keep it a surprise, enter your own email address for the gift and surprise them with the code later. π
Kindly note, gift cards are non-refundable.
Happy gifting!
What are cut-off times and when are they?
Since we prepare all of our food fresh, we need ~ 3 days to plan, prep, cook, and pack - This means that every delivery menu has a cut-off time for your order to be placed or modified.
The cut-off time for the current menu is Monday, December 4th at 12:00 PM EST
Each week, we make extra portions of our most popular dishes. You may purchase from our "After-Cut-off Menu" so long as there is still availability. These items sell fast, so be quick if you see them past the cut-off time! If you do not see an "After Cut-off Menu" it means that the extra items are all sold out and that menu can no longer be ordered from.
Please note, if you prefer to have two deliveries in one week, you must place two separate orders for the specific delivery day you would like, and you must do so by the cut-off date and time listed above.
We also send you a reminder via SMS 24 hours before cut-off, and an email 2-3 hours before cut-off (you can opt-out of both if you wish).
Can I freeze my meals?
We recommend eating your meels as they are delivered so you can fully enjoy the fresh ingredients found in each meal. However, if you do not have the chance to eat everything within 7 days, it is also possible to freeze them.
How do I heat my meals?
We do all the prepping and cooking, so all you need to do is reheat in the oven or microwave! On the back of each meal, you'll find easy steps for heating but typically the heat time is 2-3 minutes depending on your microwave. If you're ever unsure, start at 2 minutes and keep heating in 30-second increments until the inner temperature reaches 165 degrees F.
Prior to heating, remove any sauce containers
Rather heat in an oven? No problem, just follow these steps:
Peel back a corner of the film on the container.
Preheat the oven to 350° F.
Your meels container is oven-safe and can be placed directly on an oven-safe dish inside your oven. (Do not place the container directly in the oven on its own).
Heat for 10-35 minutes. Keep in mind heating times are approximate so make sure the internal meal temperature is 165 degrees F.
Peel back the film completely and let it cool for 3 to 5 minutes.
Transfer to a plate, bowl, or enjoy directly from the container!
Pro tip: Our favourite heating method is in an Anova Precision Oven - 9 minutes at 350° F with 30% steam.
Where do you deliver?
All over the place! π But really though, we deliver to anyone we can reach the next day.
We offer local delivery via WEELS. If you reside outside our local delivery zone, we utilize UPS to get you fresh meals!
Our local delivery zone encompasses the following areas (starting from Markham)
West until Kitchener (including Waterloo and Cambridge)
East until Bowmanville
North until Barrie
and the entire Greater Toronto Area
If you reside inside a local delivery zone, that means our drivers will pick up your reusable insulated bags!
You can use our service checker below to confirm that your postal code falls within our delivery areas.
Organic and conventionally grown ingredients are a key part of our menu. For more details, check out the ingredients list provided on each recipe detail page, or on the food container label.
In an effort to support a more sustainable food ecosystem, we also work with transitional organic farms that are in the process of obtaining their USDA Organic certification. This transition has, historically, been a costly and labour-intensive process for farmers. With this collaboration, we hope to make the transition to organic agriculture more accessible for all those involved.
We're not certified organic/non-GMO, but we make meals free from processed sugars and artificial ingredients. πβ¨
How do you keep your food fresh?
We're going to spit some science, hope you don't mind. π¨π¬π€
To keep our meals super fresh in transit, we use modified atmospheric packaging, which involves modifying the composition of the internal atmosphere of the meals to improve the shelf life of fresh food by 200% or more compared to packaging in air. π¦
This process lowers the amount of oxygen which slows the growth of aerobic organisms and the speed of oxidation reactions. It's safe and allows our meals to withstand 60 hours of travel and delivery time, without ever using preservatives. Insulation and non-toxic gel packs keep the meals cool until you place them in your fridge.
A friendly heads up, it's totally okay if your gel packs arrive partially melted! Your meals should still be cool to the touch.
Is your packaging environmentally friendly?
Yes, we work hard to reduce our environmental impact as much as we can. Our boxes, plastic meal containers, and cardboard sleeves are all recyclable. The gel ice packs are non-toxic, and their plastic bags around the gel packs are recyclable too. β»οΈ
If you opt for a reusable insulated bag, the bag should be either returned or re-used.
How many meals should I order?
The million-dollar question.
Depending on your budget and needs, here are a few recommendations:
I want to only eat meels!
Pick the Sunday delivery and order 6 entrees, 3 breakfasts, and 3 snacks. This will give you breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
Pick the Wednesday delivery and order 8 entrees, 4 breakfasts, and 4 snacks. This will give you breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks for Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
You can also simply order 14 entrees, 7 breakfasts, and 7 snacks all in one delivery (If you have the fridge space!)
From the above suggestions, you can reduce or increase the number of items on your order. If you want more snacks per day, add more snacks! If you eat more than three times a day, add some sides to fill out your eating schedule!
Do you offer keto meals?
Although we do not offer meals for specific diets, many of our meals do fit within a keto-friendly diet. Please double-check each specific meal to ensure they fit within your program.
We tag the meals we think are keto-friendly as "Keto Friendly" - You can sort a menu by this preference to see what is available.
What do we consider as Keto Friendly?
We base Keto on a 50 net carb per day allowance. We tag meals that are between 10-15 net carbs. (Net carbs meaning carbs minus fiber)
Every week, we add extras of our most popular dishes just in case you miss the cut-off time! Once sold out, these meals are no longer available for purchase on the after-cut-off menu.
As these meals are limited quantities, they sell fast. Be sure to act quickly!
If you don't see any interesting options, or there are simply not enough options left, be sure to choose a different delivery day to see the next full menu that is available.
Delivery days that do not contain the icon are full, active menus.
When does my automatic subscription get charged?
If your account has an active subscription, our system will automatically submit your order(s) every Monday at 12:00 PM EST.
Our subscription system processes these orders two (2) menus forward. This means if your account has an active subscription, it will process two (2) deliveries the first time it renews, and after this, orders will only be processed 1 (one) at a time on a weekly basis.
We operate in this manner to provide adequate time to make changes, additions, subtractions, or cancellations for automatically processed orders.
